Installation and Maintenance
The old, undersized central air was not cutting it. I spent a while researching mini split units and decided to go with Della. Having never installed one before, I read a bunch, watched a lot of video, went for it. Took my time, took two days to fully install the three indoor units, in very hot weather.
Smart Features
The kids, having their own control of their room, and with their doors never left open, these units work so much better. Using the app on my phone I can see just how cold they keep their rooms. Quite cold!! Once the room is cooled, the unit is really not working much to maintain that temp.

The Della Mini Split Air Conditioner ODU Tri 3 Zone is a versatile and energy-efficient option for cooling and heating up to 1350 sq. ft. It boasts a 27,000 BTU rating split across three zones: two indoor units with 9,000 BTU each and one with 12,000 BTU. With a SEER rating of 19, it provides significant energy savings using DC Inverter technology. The unit operates quietly at only 41 dB, making it suitable for noise-sensitive environments.

One of its standout features is its compatibility with Alexa, allowing for easy control via voice commands and WiFi connectivity. Additional smart functions include eco energy-saving mode, sleep mode, and a 24-hour timer. It requires professional installation and any alteration of the line-set length demands adjusting freon levels, which could be a drawback for DIY enthusiasts. The unit does not support a self-cleaning function, which might add to maintenance efforts.

It's an excellent choice for those seeking a multi-zone solution with individual temperature controls, although the need for professional setup and lack of self-cleaning might be points to consider.

Daikin 36,000 BTU (12K + 12K + 12K) 20 SEER2 3-Zone Mini Split Air Conditioner Heat Pump R-32 System with Maxwell 15 ft. Installation Kits and Wall Mounting Bracket

The Daikin 36,000 BTU 3-zone mini split air conditioner is a strong choice for those needing to cool or heat multiple rooms independently. Each of the three indoor units provides 12,000 BTU, suitable for a combined area around 1,650 square feet, offering flexible zone control to keep everyone comfortable. Its 20 SEER2 rating means it is very energy efficient, helping lower electricity bills compared to older or less efficient systems. Operating at just 24 decibels, it runs quietly, which is great for bedrooms or living spaces where noise can be distracting. Installation is made easier by including three 15-foot installation kits and a wall mounting bracket, although setting up a multi-zone system generally requires professional help and some maintenance knowledge. The use of R-32 refrigerant is environmentally friendlier than older types.

Smart features like built-in Wi-Fi and compatibility with Alexa and Google Home allow easy temperature control from your phone or by voice commands, adding convenience. Additional perks include improved air quality from a Titanium Air Purifying Filter, automatic defrosting, and quiet operation modes. On the downside, the dimensions given are unclear (listed as 1"x1"x1" which seems inaccurate), and the product is not Energy Star certified, which some buyers might expect for high efficiency. Also, while rated for a wide temperature range, extreme climates might push the limits of its heating or cooling capacity.

This Daikin mini split is well suited for people seeking a quiet, efficient, and smart multi-zone system for a variety of home spaces without ducts, but installation complexity and verifying exact sizing for your space should be carefully considered.

The system runs very quietly and efficiently, maintaining excellent performance nearly a year after installation without any issues.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation is straightforward with clear instructions, and following proper procedures like using a torque wrench and vacuuming the line sets ensures reliable performance.

The TOSOT 36,000 BTU Tri 3 Zone Mini Split Air Conditioner is designed to cool and heat up to three separate spaces simultaneously, with three indoor units each rated at 12,000 BTU. This makes it suitable for medium to large homes or offices, covering up to about 2,250 square feet. With a high SEER2 rating of 21, it’s energy efficient, which helps reduce electricity bills compared to older or less efficient models. The system is Energy Star certified and might qualify for federal tax rebates, adding to its cost-saving appeal. Noise-wise, it runs around 63 decibels, which is similar to a normal conversation, so it’s fairly quiet but not whisper-quiet.

Installation is easier than traditional central ACs since it requires no ductwork; it comes with a 16.4-foot copper line set, but you’ll need to provide your own power cord. Maintenance is straightforward because each indoor unit operates independently. The unit is built to handle extreme weather, working well in both very cold and hot climates, which is great if you live in areas with wide temperature swings. Smart features include app control and voice commands, allowing convenient temperature adjustments from anywhere.

The system’s size and weight (310 pounds) mean it needs professional installation, and the noise level might be noticeable in very quiet settings. Also, since parts can arrive separately, installation scheduling should be planned carefully. For those seeking a reliable, energy-efficient multi-zone AC with modern smart controls that can handle varying weather, this TOSOT model is a strong choice.

Buying Guide for the Best Three Zone Mini Split Air Conditioners

Choosing the right three-zone mini-split air conditioner can significantly improve the comfort of your home by allowing you to control the temperature in three separate areas independently. To make an informed decision, it's important to understand the key specifications and how they relate to your specific needs. Here are the main factors to consider when selecting a three-zone mini-split air conditioner.
BTU RatingBTU (British Thermal Unit) rating measures the cooling capacity of the air conditioner. This spec is crucial because it determines how effectively the unit can cool your space. For a three-zone system, you need to consider the combined BTU rating for all three zones. Typically, a higher BTU rating means more cooling power. For small rooms, a lower BTU rating (e.g., 9,000-12,000 BTUs per zone) may suffice, while larger rooms or areas with high heat loads may require higher ratings (e.g., 18,000-24,000 BTUs per zone). Assess the size and heat load of each zone to determine the appropriate BTU rating for your needs.
SEER RatingSEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating measures the energy efficiency of the air conditioner. A higher SEER rating indicates better energy efficiency, which can lead to lower electricity bills. SEER ratings typically range from 13 to 25. For those looking to save on energy costs and reduce their environmental impact, a higher SEER rating (e.g., 20-25) is ideal. However, if initial cost is a concern, a mid-range SEER rating (e.g., 16-20) can offer a good balance between efficiency and affordability. Consider your energy usage patterns and long-term savings when choosing the SEER rating.
Noise LevelNoise level, measured in decibels (dB), indicates how loud the air conditioner will be during operation. This is important for maintaining a comfortable and quiet environment, especially in bedrooms or living areas. Noise levels for mini-split systems typically range from 20 dB (very quiet) to 50 dB (moderate noise). For a peaceful setting, look for units with lower noise levels (e.g., 20-30 dB). If noise is less of a concern, higher levels (e.g., 40-50 dB) may be acceptable. Consider where the units will be installed and how sensitive you are to noise when evaluating this spec.
Installation and MaintenanceInstallation and maintenance requirements can vary between models and are important for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of your system. Some units may require professional installation, while others might be more DIY-friendly. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters and checking refrigerant levels, is necessary to keep the system running smoothly. Consider your comfort level with installation and maintenance tasks, as well as the availability of professional services in your area. Opt for a system that matches your ability to maintain it or ensure you have access to reliable professional help.
Smart FeaturesSmart features, such as Wi-Fi connectivity, remote control, and programmable settings, can enhance the convenience and functionality of your air conditioner. These features allow you to control the system remotely, set schedules, and integrate with smart home systems. If you value convenience and tech integration, look for models with robust smart features. For those who prefer simplicity, basic models without advanced features may be more suitable. Consider how much you value remote control and automation when choosing a system with smart features.
