Your Guide to Buying a Sugar Cane Juicer

Yehudah Posnick

It’s estimated that 70-80% of the world’s sugar is produced from sugar cane. But, there are alternative uses for sugar cane. If you put sugar cane through a juicer, the juice will be around 70-75% water, 15% fiber, and the rest sucrose, which is the sugar with which we’re familiar. An 8-ounce glass of sugar cane juice will contain 30 grams of sugar and around 250 calories. However, sugar cane juice is not just sugar and water! The juice is actually rich in antioxidants and minerals such as iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and some calcium. It’s both refreshing and a quick source of energy. To reap these benefits, it’s worthwhile considering getting a sugar cane juicer.

We’ll see that there are manual juicers that are primarily for preparing sugar cane juice. There are also juicers that will produce a glass of sugar cane in a matter of seconds and can prepare juice from a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and greens. And there are masticating and twin-gear juicers that will take considerably longer, but will extract more nutrients from the pulp. Let’s have a look at the options!

Types of Sugar Cane Juicers

We can distinguish between three main types of sugar cane juicers:

  • Manual models: You’ll see that there are surprisingly efficient sugar cane juicers that you operate manually, by turning a crank! The Samger Sugar Cane Juicer is one such model. It’s designed specifically for extracting juice from sugar cane. It can produce as much as 100 lbs of juice per hour. The inlet into which you insert the sugar cane is 2” wide (= 50.8 mm). Even though it can accept such large pieces of sugar cane, the manufacturer recommends that you cut any pieces of sugar cane that are wider than 30 mm in half, so as not to overload the juicer’s mechanism. It is also suitable for juicing ginger, apples, sorghum, and corn stalk.

  • Centrifugal juicer: These are the most modestly priced among juicers, but they’re popular due to how fast they work. These employ a spinning blade that shreds fruits and vegetables into a pulp. You can find centrifugal juicers that employ two speeds: a slower speed, where the blade rotates at 12000-15000 RPM, for soft fruits such as oranges, apples, and grapes, and a faster speed, from 15000-18000 RPM for harder fruits and vegetables such as carrots, celery, beets, and ginger. (You’d therefore prefer the high speed for sugar cane.) The pulp passes through a mesh filter that separates the juice from the remaining pulp. An example is the Mueller Ultra Power Centrifugal Juicer.

  • Masticating juicer: This type of juicer has two stages:

    • It first employs a spiral-shaped auger that rotates slowly to extract juice by crushing the fruit or vegetable.

    • It then strains the pulp out through a strainer, where the pulp exits through one chute and the juice through another.

The auger in these juicers rotates at a speed of 40-100 RPM. This slow speed ensures that the appliance doesn’t heat up. They’re called “cold press extractors” for this reason. An example is the line of Omega Juice Extractors. They can also be used for extruding pasta, preparing nut butter, grinding coffee and spices, and preparing soy or almond milk. They come in horizontal and vertical models. The Model NC900HDC Omega Juice Extractor is a horizontal model, where the rotating auger is placed horizontally. The Model VSJ843QS Omega Vertical Masticating Juicer has the auger placed vertically. This makes for a more compact design, which takes up less space on your countertop.

  • Twin-gear juicer: You may see this type called a “triturating” juicer (“triturating” means “grind to a fine powder”). It uses two interlocking gears that are positioned very close to one another, to extract as much juice as possible. This is a cold-press juicing mechanism, with the gears rotating at 110 RPM. An example is the Tribest Jumbo Twin Gears Juice Extractor.

What reviewers say

Here’s what customers say about their choice of sugar cane juicer:

  • Prefer stainless steel: There are juicers with stainless steel parts. These are typically rust-resistant, as well as durable. They will also be easier to clean properly. Some customers who bought a juicer with plastic parts were disappointed when a plastic part would break, and they would have to order a replacement part.

  • No-drip spout: There are juicers that have a spigot or tap that you can open and close. Customers prefer this design because you don’t lose any juice. It remains in the juice container until you’re ready to serve. This is a feature of the Omega Vertical Slow Masticating Juice Extractor (Model VSJ843QS).

Important Features

Here are some features of the best sugar cane juicers, which may help you decide on one model over another:

  • Clean after use: For juicers that don’t have stainless steel grinders, it’s recommended to rinse the parts after use, so that they don’t rust. Some juicers have an auto-cleaning feature, which make it easier to clean. The Omega Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer (Model VSJ843QS) has such a feature.

  • Advantages of masticating and twin-gear juicers: Masticating and twin-gear juicers operate more slowly. But the juice that they’ll produce from sugar cane will have more minerals because they’re more efficient in getting out every last drop of juice from the pulp. The masticating juicer will produce a dry pulp, and the twin-gear juicer will manage to extract even more juice. Another benefit is that the juice will last longer. because it’ll have a higher percentage of antioxidants, and will operate at a cooler temperature. This will help prevent spoilage. For example, while the juice from a centrifugal juicer will spoil in just a few hours, juice from a masticating or twin-gear juicer can last 1.5-3 days!

  • Accessories: There are sugar cane juicers that come with accessories that allow the juicer to be put to work in preparing other things. The Tribest Jumbo Twin Gears Juice Extractor comes with a homogenizer attachment so that it can make various types of nut butter and sorbets.

Final Verdict

We’ve seen some of the best sugar cane juicers available presently. Some of them are suitable for other tough, pithy fruits and vegetables as well. And there are other juicers that give you different options, depending on what you feel like juicing at the moment. Look over the Best Reviews Guide, and choose out a sugar cane juicer today!
